No, really, Who Is Charlie Miller?

We owe so much to this guy for all the work he has done. I have gotten curious about him as of late. Given how prolific he is, it seems like tape collecting and remastering is his day job. Where does he live? What does he do for a living? What are his favorite shows?

Charlie is one of our great GD humanitarians - fortunate, talented and generous.
The answers to some of your questions reside in past posts of his.

Charlie's passion for releasing top notch Grateful Dead recordings is unfathomable. He is one of the greatest Grateful Dead fans out there. Anyone who has listened to a Grateful Dead recording that has been passed through Charlie's hands, owe him great thanks. I sure do. Thank you again, Charlie. Your work is truly appreciated.

I live in San Diego and have been working for Steve Kimock for the last 9 years. As of 2 months ago I have been working for a great band from Florida called The Heavy Pets. I am their soundman, road manager, production manager and recording engineer.

I'm a fairly recent discoverer of the Grateful Dead. I'm 55 and live in Scotland and would like to give my sincerest thanks and deep gratitude to the wonderful transcriptions and sound quality. You are a very gifted man who has a deep affinity with the band ,so that your boards are sympathetic to the band. You give me great joy and help me through my days. These are gifts beyong money. May you be well and happy.
Thanks
Bill R

Charlie Miller is a guy with really good taste. As proved by this, which comes from my son. (Really.) Who informs me that Charlie Miller is in the Sponge Bob Fan Club. And hence all the more cool.

Btw, Charlie has now given me, in addition to all his excellent work, a real temptation to join Facebook -- namely, this link on his page to a truly fine cause:

Charlie's the only Deadhead I know of (other than maybe Bill Walton, but he's probably in a special class of Deadheads?) who someone made a t-shirt for/in reference to. Don't remember where I saw the shirt, but it's a spin-off of the Miller High Life (beer) symbol. Pretty cool actually . . .

Yes, but it would be better if it referenced Sponge Bob.

This Deadhead also a T-shirt, which your very own Otis can wear:

And then there's this one, about still another Deadhead:

Charlie is a complete rarity around these parts; he is a kind, considerate, passionate human being who has one of the biggest GD taper jones i have ever witnessed in my life. And having been a taper jones back in the day, i say this out of respect.

And though i don't necessarily agree with him in terms of the musicality of performances, he is a genius when it comes to the linear processing of all things audio and sound reproduction.

Oh and one more thing, he really gets the GD "sharing" thing. He simply gives and gives without taking anything in return.

God Bless > Charlie Miller

Thanks for this, Hasher. My favorite quote:

===

DSP: I'm actually surprised the band never hired you! Now that I think of it, why the hell hasn't Rhino hired you yet to help them finally get the Dead's vault 100% remastered and released?

CM: There’s a lot of things about Rhino that puzzles me.

Charlie comes around from time to time. It's good when he does. He has cleaned up a mighty amount of tapes.

Expect to hear some more during the Grateful Dead Marathon on KPFA in just a few weeks. David Gans uses a lot of his remasters on the GD Hour too...
